Getting Started with Podcasting
Creating podcasts
- You'll need some basic hardware and software to record your podcast.
- Media Commons can help you record, edit, and publish your podcasts. Visit the MC Podcasting page, or setup an appointment.
- You can also create lecture recordings at several specially equipped technology classrooms.
Setting up a space and publishing your podcasts
- You can publish your podcasts in iTunes U or on your Penn State Blog.
- If you are an instructor, you can use the iTunes U Dashboard to create a course podcast in iTunes U.
- If you want to create a non-course podcast (i.e. for your department or for a speaker series), fill out the Podcast Show Setup form.
iTunes U vs Blog
- iTunes U offers a simplified interface for managing your podcasts and providing access to students enrolled in a class, or for sharing with the public. Users can easily subscribe to content using the iTunes application. Course podcasts allow students to download podcasts, as well as upload content to a drop box.
- Blogs allow you to easily publish podcasts to your Penn State web space, and provide the ability for others to comment and reflect on podcasts. Faculty and students and create their own blogs, and content can be aggregated into a course blog. For more information, visit the Blogs at Penn State site.
Podcasting in the classroom
- This Summer, the computers in the technology classrooms at Penn State have been upgraded. As a result, some of you that have been formerly using the model "Dell Optiplex 280" have had computers replaced with the newer "Dell Optiplex 755's." These computers require some configurational changes in order for them to successfully record your voice. The details are minor and instructions can be found here.
